GROUP PROJECT IDEAS

April 4, 2007 · 8 Comments

My strongest interest for the group project is in Seattle area subjects.

Since we have several Chinese students in the class, how about a group project about Seattle’s Chinese heritage from the perspective of visiting Chinese students? It could be a bi-lingual site with sections including reviews of several of Seattle’s Chinese restaurants and students’ reactions to a visit to the Wing Luke Asian Museum. Such a site could actually be a valuable resource for Chinese students coming to the University of Washington in the future, because it could help them understand and feel comfortable in their new environment.

Another idea would be a celebration of springtime on and around the UW campus. Photographs of flowers and trees could be combined with interviews with people in the University’s horticulture and maintenance departments. Feature stories could be included about notable species of trees and other flora found on campus.

Either sounds terrific! – although the former seems quite broad and might have a hard time narrowing down to a specific theme. Possibly an examination of something in the ID? As to your second idea, you hit the nail on the head in terms of timeliness! – maybe a profile on the cherry blossom trees in the quad – where did they come from, what decisions were made to bring them to campus, do they have any special, unknown relevance to campus history?

The Chinese heritage idea might work well with Chloe’s idea about a survival guide for international students in the U.S.

Fun and practical – When I was an exchange student, I tried to take advantage of all the sightseeing around me and brochures plus events listed by the school really helped!

I like your first idea very much. Thanks for your concern about Chinese students. I found that there are many Chinese heritage in Seattle. The amount is much more than i could imagine. I think your project topic is worth observing and noticing for us.

I like your first idea! I’m interested in the cultural part in Seattle. I believe it will be useful for future Asia students. =)

I think this is a fascinating idea. I would especially be interested in knowing how and when the first wave of Chinese settlers arrived in Seattle (were they railroad workers? Miners? Cooks who fed the lumbermen?) and how they were treated. One interesting topic would be the arrival of the women immigrants and how their lives in Seattle were different from their lives in China.

Oh I love this idea. For me, I really need this kind of sites so that I can visit many places. Also, Chinese food has many different style so that you can have diversity. The idea is good and I will be glad to help translating in.
